German Roach
(BLATTELLA GERMANICA)
Small (1/2 to 5/8 inch), light brown to tan, with two dark parallel stripes behind the head. The most common indoor roach in Missouri kitchens, apartments, and restaurants. Reproduces fastest of any species — a single female can produce 300+ offspring in her lifetime. Prefers warm, humid spots: behind refrigerators, inside appliance motors, under kitchen sinks, in pantry corners. Sometimes called ‘palmetto bugs’ or ‘water bugs.’ Found in basements, crawlspaces, garages, sewers, and utility access tunnels. They prefer damp, dark spaces and can fly short distances. If you’re seeing large reddish-brown roaches in the basement or coming up from drains, this is the species. Saliva, droppings, and shed skins are known asthma triggers.
Oriental Roach
(BLATTA ORIENTALIS)
Medium-large (1-1.25 inches), dark brown to black with a glossy body. Often mistaken for large beetles. Strong, unpleasant musty odor when populations are large. Strongly associated with water — they come up through floor drains, sump pits, and sewer connections. Common in basements and ground-floor utility areas. Brownbanded Roach

Small (1/2 inch), light brown with two distinctive yellow-brown bands across the wings. Less common than German roaches but harder to find. Wood Cockroach

Medium (3/4 to 1 inch), tan to brown, similar appearance to American cockroach but smaller. NOT a true indoor pest — they live outdoors in wooded areas, leaf litter, and woodpiles. They enter homes accidentally, usually attracted by exterior lights. They don’t reproduce indoors and typically die off within a few weeks. If you’re finding them seasonally (spring/early summer) and only a few at a time, you likely don’t need treatment — just better exterior light positioning and entry-point sealing.
Signs of a Cockroach Infestation

- Live roaches during the day. Roaches are nocturnal and hide. Seeing one in daylight usually means the population has grown enough that nighttime hiding spots are full.
