Most ‘bee’ calls are actually wasps — here’s how we tell the difference
About 70% of customers who call about ‘bees’ actually have wasps or hornets. The two are completely different and require different responses:
- BODY: True bees have fuzzy, hair-covered bodies. Wasps have smooth, shiny bodies.
- SHAPE: Bees have thick, robust bodies with no distinct waist. Wasps have a narrow ‘waist’ between thorax and abdomen.
- BEHAVIOR: Bees focus on flowers and pollen, fly in calm patterns. Wasps focus on protein, fly aggressively, especially around outdoor food.
- NEST: Honey bees build wax comb inside enclosed spaces (wall voids, hollow trees, chimneys). Wasps build paper nests visibly under eaves or hidden in ground holes.
- ROLE: Bees are pollinators essential to food production. Wasps are predators (mostly beneficial in moderate numbers) but require removal when nesting near human activity.

Carpenter Bees — Structural Wood Damage
Carpenter bees (Xylocopa virginica) look similar to large bumble bees but have a SHINY (not fuzzy) abdomen. They bore perfectly round 1/2 inch holes into exposed wood — deck rails, fascia boards, eaves, exposed roof beams, wooden sheds. Female carpenter bees do the boring; males are territorial but cannot sting (males have no stinger).
Damage: each tunnel is 4-6 inches initial but can expand to 1-2 feet through repeated seasonal use. Multiple carpenter bees on the same property can cause meaningful cumulative damage to wood structures over years.
Treatment: targeted dust treatment of active boreholes, followed by sealing once activity stops. Treatment typically happens spring through early summer when females are actively boring. We don’t exterminate carpenter bees broadcast — only the specific boring females causing damage. Painted, stained, and pressure-treated wood is significantly less attractive to carpenter bees — we recommend protective coating during follow-up.
Bumble Bees — Beneficial Pollinators
Bumble bees (Bombus spp.) are large, fuzzy, black-and-yellow native pollinators. They typically nest underground in old rodent burrows, under sheds, or in dense vegetation. Small colonies (50-400 bees, much smaller than honey bee colonies).
Our default approach: LEAVE THEM ALONE if possible. Bumble bees are native pollinators with declining populations. Their colonies die off naturally in fall — only the queens overwinter — so a nest you find in summer will be gone by November on its own. Unless the nest is in a critical location (kid play area, doorway, mowing path), the most responsible action is no action.
If treatment is genuinely needed because of location, we apply targeted treatment late in the day when the colony is in the nest, and only after discussing the trade-offs with you.
