Does Baking Soda Kill Roaches?

By Jacob Ingledue

Baking soda is cheap and already in your kitchen, so it is a popular roach remedy. Here is how it is supposed to work, how fast to expect results, and why most people are disappointed.

Still seeing roaches after trying this?

Home remedies handle the few you see. They don’t reach the nest — and a single German cockroach female can produce hundreds of offspring. If they keep coming back, the colony is somewhere you can’t get to.

The short answer

Baking soda is not a reliable roach killer. It may harm a roach that eats enough of it, but roaches often ignore it, it works slowly if at all, and it won’t clear an infestation. It won’t kill roaches overnight.

How the baking soda method is supposed to work

The usual advice is to mix baking soda with something roaches like, most often sugar, then leave it where they travel. The idea is that a roach eats the mix and the baking soda upsets its digestion.

The claims you may have read are that:

  • It produces gas that ruptures the roach’s body. Evidence for this is weak.
  • It dehydrates the roach or disrupts its gut. This is more plausible in a lab, but real homes work differently.

Why it disappoints

  • Roaches may not eat it. Baking soda has little food value, and roaches often skip it if better food is around.
  • The dose matters. A roach needs to eat a meaningful amount, and a light dusting won’t do it.
  • It loses effect. Moisture and dust reduce it, and roaches may learn to avoid the spot.
  • It doesn’t reach the nest. Roaches hide in walls, appliances and cracks. Baking soda placed in the open misses most of the population.
  • It doesn’t stop breeding. A single female can produce many offspring, so a few dead roaches don’t change the trend.

How fast does it work?

If it works at all, expect days, not hours. “Overnight” claims are not reliable. If you see fewer roaches after using it, that may come from cleaning or other changes you made at the same time.

Making the mix: if you still want to try it

Treat this as a small helper, not a treatment.

  1. Mix equal parts baking soda and powdered sugar.
  2. Place small amounts on cardboard or lids, not loose on counters.
  3. Set them where you see roaches, such as behind appliances, under sinks, and along baseboards.
  4. Remove other food sources so the mix is more tempting.
  5. Replace it every few days.

Keep the mix away from children and pets, and store it out of reach. Baking soda is a household product, but eaten in quantity it can cause harm. If a child or pet swallows a large amount, contact your doctor, vet or poison control.

Other home remedies: what they add

  • Boric acid: more effective than baking soda in many cases, but a pesticide. Use only as the label directs, keep it away from children and pets, and don’t scatter it in open areas.
  • Vinegar: cleans but does not kill roaches. See do roaches like the smell of vinegar.
  • Essential oils and smells: may bother roaches briefly and won’t clear an infestation. See smells roaches hate.
  • Diatomaceous earth: slow, and it only works while dry and where roaches walk through it.

None of these reliably solves a roach problem alone.

What works better

  1. Gel baits. Roach baits placed in cracks and along their paths are far more effective, because roaches carry the bait back to the nest.
  2. Sanitation. Wipe up crumbs and grease, store food in sealed containers, and take out the trash.
  3. Remove water. Fix leaks, and dry sinks and drains at night.
  4. Seal cracks and gaps around pipes, baseboards and cabinets.
  5. Reduce clutter, especially cardboard and stacked paper.
  6. Monitor with sticky traps to see where roaches travel and how many there are.

When to call a professional

Call a pro if you see roaches during the day (a sign of a larger population), spot droppings that look like coffee grounds or pepper, find egg cases, or keep seeing roaches after a few weeks of trying to control them yourself. German cockroaches in particular breed fast and spread through walls and between units.

Frequently asked questions

Does baking soda kill roaches?

It might harm a roach that eats enough, but it is unreliable and slow. It won’t clear an infestation.

How long does baking soda take to kill roaches?

If it works, expect days. “Overnight” results are not reliable.

Does baking soda and sugar kill roaches?

The sugar attracts them, but roaches often skip the mix, and few eat enough. Results are inconsistent.

Does baking soda kill roach eggs or nests?

No. It does not affect egg cases or roaches hidden in walls.

Is baking soda harmful to pets and children?

A small amount is a household product, but a large amount can cause harm if swallowed. Keep it out of reach and contact a doctor, vet or poison control if someone ingests a lot.

What kills roaches better than baking soda?

Gel baits, sanitation and professional treatment. Nothing removes roaches permanently.

Why do I still see roaches after using baking soda?

It rarely reaches the roaches hiding in walls and appliances, and it does nothing about breeding.
