Raccoons in the Kansas City Metro
Raccoons are the wildlife call that spikes every spring across the metro — the Common Raccoon is Missouri’s only species, 16–28 pounds, with the black facial mask and ringed tail everyone already recognizes. They’re strong climbers and comfortable in the same brick two-stories, garages, and chimneys that draw KC’s other attic wildlife, and they’re active at night, so most calls start with scratching after dark.
Missouri classifies raccoons as a rabies vector species, which rules out relocation as a public health measure — the Missouri Department of Conservation doesn’t recommend it either, since it spreads disease and often leaves the animal to starve in unfamiliar territory. We make sure the animals are out, seal every entry point and clean up the contamination a raccoon latrine leaves behind. Female raccoons enter homes to give birth, typically March–May; a single raccoon is usually a 3–10 day job, a mother with kits runs 2–4 weeks since we won’t seal an attic with young still inside.
