Bat Removal & Live Exclusion in Springfield & Kansas City, MO
Scratching and chirping in the attic at dusk. Bats flying out from under the soffit as the sun sets. A single bat circling the bedroom at 2 AM. Bats in your home are stressful — and the response has to be done right because bats are legally protected in Missouri.
Titan Pest Pro provides professional bat removal across Springfield, Kansas City, and surrounding communities. Live exclusion only — we do not kill bats because lethal control is illegal under Missouri Wildlife Code. We honor maternity season restrictions (typically May 15 to August 15) when flightless young are present. We identify species before exclusion because some Missouri bats are federally endangered or listed. Free inspection. Same-day or next-day response for bat-in-living-space situations.

Bats Are Protected in Missouri — Here's What We Can Actually Do
All bats in Missouri are protected under Missouri Wildlife Code (3 CSR 10). Lethal control — poison, traps that kill, extermination — is illegal. That is not negotiable. Some Missouri bat species have additional federal protections under the Endangered Species Act: Indiana bat (federally endangered), northern long-eared bat (federally listed), tricolored bat (under USFWS review for listing).
What we CAN do, and what we actually do, is LIVE EXCLUSION:
- We identify the species first (some species require additional coordination because of ESA listing)
- We find all entry/exit points where bats are using your home
- We install one-way exclusion devices at the active entry points — these allow bats to fly out for their nightly feeding but prevent re-entry
- We seal all secondary entry points so when the bats find a closed door, they do not just use another opening
- After 5-7 days when all bats have exited and not returned, we remove the exclusion devices and seal the final openings
- We perform guano cleanup with proper PPE
Bats find their own new roost — we do not transport them. The word ‘relocation’ is not accurate; ‘exclusion’ is what actually happens. They are bats — they fly, they pick somewhere else.
Common Missouri Bat Species
Missouri is home to approximately 15 bat species. Three commonly roost in buildings:
Big Brown Bat (Eptesicus fuscus)
Little Brown Bat (Myotis lucifugus)
If we identify a federally listed species during inspection, we may need to coordinate with the Missouri Department of Conservation before proceeding. Uncommon but does happen, and we are honest about it.
Maternity Season Restrictions (May 15 – August 15)
Female bats give birth to a single pup in late spring and raise the pup through summer until it is old enough to fly and hunt on its own. Maternity season in Missouri runs approximately mid-May through mid-August.
During maternity season, we do not perform full exclusion on active bat colonies. Why: if exclusion devices are installed when flightless young are inside, mother bats flying out at dusk to feed are blocked from returning. The young die in the walls or attic. This is inhumane to a protected species and creates a severe decomposition problem for the homeowner.
What we DO during maternity season:
Free inspection. We identify the colony, count and document entry points, identify the species, and prepare the exclusion plan.
Schedule exclusion for after August 15 (the standard safe date for Missouri operators).
Single-bat removal if a bat enters your living space — we can handle individual bats during summer because that single bat is not supporting flightless young.
Documentation of the colony for the post-maternity exclusion job. Often the prep work — sealing secondary entry points that are not the main bat exit — can begin during the maternity period.
If a wildlife operator offers to perform full exclusion in June or July, that is a yellow flag worth questioning. Responsible operators schedule full exclusion outside maternity season.
Signs You Have a Bat Colony in Your Home
Several signs that indicate active bat activity:
Bats flying out from a specific location at dusk.
Bat guano (droppings).
Small dark pellets similar in size to mouse droppings but crumbly when dried (rodent droppings are firm). Accumulates below entry points, on attic floors near the roost, sometimes on exterior walls below soffit gaps. Distinct musky smell.
Dark grease stains around entry points.
Bats squeezing through small openings leave skin oils that gradually darken surrounding material. Looks like dark streaks or smudges near gaps in soffits, eaves, and fascia.
Scratching, chirping, or fluttering sounds in walls or ceiling, typically at dawn (returning to roost) and dusk (departing for feeding).
Distinctive ammonia-like odor from accumulated urine and guano in attics. Most noticeable in summer when heat intensifies the smell.
Occasional bats inside the living space. A bat that ends up in a bedroom or living room is often a young bat that got disoriented — may indicate a colony in the attic or wall voids.
What to Do If a Bat Is in Your Living Space (Rabies Protocol)
If you find a bat inside your home — especially in a bedroom or any room where someone was sleeping — the situation may require public health response. Per CDC and Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services protocol:
Situations that DO need rabies evaluation:
Situations that DO need rabies evaluation:
- You wake up with a bat in your bedroom
- A bat is found in a room where a sleeping person, young child, intoxicated person, or unattended pet was present
- You were potentially bitten, scratched, or had direct skin contact with a bat
- The bat appears sick, behaves erratically (active during daylight, cannot fly normally, on the ground), or is dead in a suspicious circumstance
What to do:
- Do not kill the bat in a way that destroys its head/brain (the brain tissue is what the lab tests for rabies)
- If you can safely close the bat in one room, do that and call us — we can capture it for testing
- If you cannot safely contain it: leave the room, close the door, and contact us or your local animal control
- Call your healthcare provider about post-exposure prophylaxis, especially if there is any chance of unobserved exposure (sleeping people may not know if they were bitten)
- Missouri State Public Health Laboratory tests bats for rabies (no charge for animals submitted through proper channels with documented exposure)
Less than 1% of bats are rabid. But because rabies is essentially 100% fatal once symptoms appear, the protocol exists for good reason. Talk to your healthcare provider about any potential exposure.
Medical disclaimer:
This is general public health guidance per CDC and Missouri DHSS. It is NOT medical advice. For any specific situation, contact your healthcare provider or call Poison Control (1-800-222-1222).
Our Bat Exclusion Process — Step by Step
At Titan Pest Pro, we use a proven, humane approach to safely and effectively remove bats from your property. Since bats are a protected species, we ensure that our methods are safe and environmentally responsible, focusing on live exclusion, entry-point sealing, and cleanup rather than lethal control. Here’s a breakdown of our bat removal process:
Step 1 — Free Inspection
Step 2 — Treatment Plan and Timing
Step 3 — Secondary Entry Sealing
Step 4 — Live Exclusion Devices
Step 5 — Guano Cleanup and Ongoing Protection
Most companies handle just one — pests, or termites, or wildlife — and refer the rest out. Titan handles all three as one local team. One call, one company, one crew that knows your property.
If a pest is covered by your plan and it comes back, we re-service at no charge — no matter what. No fine print.
Reach out and you’ll get a prompt call-back from people who know Springfield and Kansas City — not a distant call center.
Bat Guano Cleanup and Histoplasmosis Risk
Accumulated bat guano (droppings) in attics, walls, and other roost areas carries a specific health risk: histoplasmosis. The fungus Histoplasma capsulatum grows in bat and bird droppings, and disturbing the dried material releases microscopic spores that can be inhaled.
Histoplasmosis can range from flu-like illness to serious lung disease. People with weakened immune systems, infants, and elderly individuals are at higher risk. The disease is treatable with antifungal medications when caught, but exposure is the easier thing to prevent.
Why DIY guano cleanup is risky:
- Sweeping, vacuuming with standard vacuums, or simply walking through contaminated guano stirs spores into the air
- Standard dust masks do not filter the spores (they are too small)
- Disturbing accumulated guano without proper PPE has caused documented outbreaks of histoplasmosis
Our cleanup protocol:
- N95 or higher respirators (P100 for severe contamination)
- Full body covering with disposable Tyvek suits when warranted
- HEPA-filtered vacuums for collection (not standard vacuums)
- EPA-registered antimicrobials applied to contaminated surfaces
- Proper disposal of contaminated material per biological waste protocols
- Insulation replacement coordination if attic insulation is heavily contaminated
Bat Exclusion Cost in Springfield and Kansas City
Bat exclusion is higher-ticket work than most pest services because it involves construction-grade exclusion work, multiple visits, and often cleanup. Honest ranges for the Springfield-Kansas City market:
- Single bat removal from living space (one bat, no colony): typically $200 to $400.
- Small colony with single entry point: typically $800 to $1,800.
- Multiple entry points, moderate colony: typically $1,800 to $3,500.
- Large colony with significant guano cleanup and insulation replacement: typically $3,500 to $8,000+.
- Titan Wildlife Defense ongoing protection: contact for current pricing.
Free inspection includes a written estimate before any work. Bat exclusion is rarely cheap, but it is done right one time — not done cheaply five times.
Ongoing Protection with Titan Wildlife Defense
Properties that hosted one bat colony often have suitable conditions for new colonies — dark cavity space, warm attic temperatures, proximity to insect foraging areas. After successful exclusion, ongoing monitoring catches new entry attempts and verifies the original exclusion holds.
Our Titan Wildlife Defense plan provides bi-monthly exterior inspections that catch new entry points before bats establish in them, plus priority response if new activity is detected. Most bat customers move to Titan Wildlife Defense because dealing with a second bat colony costs significantly more than ongoing prevention.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Why don’t you use lethal control for bats?
Because lethal control of bats is illegal under Missouri Wildlife Code. All bats in Missouri are protected; some species (Indiana bat, northern long-eared bat) are also federally protected under the Endangered Species Act. Live exclusion using one-way devices is the only legal removal method in Missouri. Our exclusion approach is what state and federal law require.
What is maternity season and why does it matter?
Bat maternity season in Missouri runs approximately May 15 to August 15. During this period, female bats raise flightless young in the colony. If exclusion is performed during maternity season, mother bats are blocked from returning to feed their young, and the young die in the walls or attic. This is inhumane to a protected species and creates a severe decomposition problem. Responsible Missouri wildlife operators schedule full exclusion for after August 15. We do too.
A bat just flew through my house — what should I do?
First, do not kill it in a way that destroys its head (the brain is what gets tested for rabies if testing is needed). If you can safely close the bat in one room, do that and call us — we can capture it for testing. If you cannot safely contain it, leave the room and close the door. CRITICAL: if you woke up with the bat in your bedroom, OR if a sleeping person, young child, intoxicated person, or unattended pet was in the room — call your healthcare provider about post-exposure rabies prophylaxis. Sleeping people may not know if they were bitten. Less than 1% of bats are rabid but the protocol exists because rabies is essentially fatal once symptoms appear.
How long does bat exclusion take?
The exclusion devices stay in place 5-7 days to ensure all bats have exited the structure. Before that, we typically spend 2-6 hours sealing secondary entry points. Counting inspection, exclusion installation, monitoring period, and final sealing, the full job typically spans 1-2 weeks. For severe colonies with significant cleanup, longer.
How much does bat removal cost?
Honest ranges: single bat removal $200-$400. Small colony with single entry point $800-$1,800. Multiple entry points, moderate colony $1,800-$3,500. Large colony with significant guano cleanup and insulation replacement $3,500-$8,000+. Bat work is rarely cheap but it is done right one time. Free inspection includes written estimate.
Why is bat guano dangerous to clean up?
Bat guano can harbor Histoplasma capsulatum, the fungus that causes histoplasmosis (a respiratory disease ranging from flu-like to serious lung illness). Disturbing accumulated guano releases microscopic spores into the air. Standard dust masks do not filter the spores; sweeping or vacuuming with regular equipment stirs spores into the breathing zone. Professional cleanup uses N95+ respirators, full body coverings, HEPA-filtered vacuums, and EPA-registered antimicrobials.
Will the bats come back?
If exclusion is done properly with secondary entry sealing, the same colony cannot return. But new bats are always around — your home may have suitable conditions that attract them again. Our Titan Wildlife Defense plan provides bi-monthly monitoring to catch new entries before they establish.
Can you guarantee the work?
We guarantee the exclusion is properly performed and the sealed entry points remain bat-proof for the specified warranty period. We do not guarantee that NO bat will ever approach your home again — bats are wild animals, and Missouri has plenty of them. What we guarantee is that the work was done right, the entry points are sealed properly, and we will address issues that arise from our workmanship.

Jordan came out and helped when we thought we heard some bats in our attic. Ended up being a bat likely just hanging around outside of the house next to our gutter and no real big cause for concern.

We used Titan to deal with a bat issue in our attic. They removed the bat, sealed the opening and cleaned up the mess in the attic for half the price of other pest companies we contacted.
