Wasp Nest Removal in Springfield & Kansas City, MO

A paper wasp nest under the eaves. Yellow jackets coming out of a hole in the lawn near where the kids play. A nest the size of a basketball hanging from a tree branch. If you’re trying to enjoy your backyard and you’re slapping wasps off your iced tea, you need this handled — not next week.

Titan Pest Pro provides same-day or next-day wasp removal in Springfield, Kansas City, and surrounding communities. veteran-founded. Licensed Missouri technicians. Family-safe approach — we remove the nest, treat the area, and tell you what attracted them so they don’t come back. Free inspection.

Wasps under the eaves, in the grill cover, near the kids’ swing set — we handle it

Wasp removal is one of those jobs that LOOKS simple from a hardware store aisle. Grab a can of wasp spray, blast the nest at dusk, done. Sometimes that works. Often it doesn’t — here’s when DIY goes wrong:

  • You can’t see the full nest. Yellow jacket nests in particular are often underground or inside wall voids. The opening is small but the colony underneath can hold thousands. Spraying the entrance doesn’t reach them.
  • Late summer and fall colonies are bigger and more aggressive. A nest that was ‘just a few wasps’ in June can be 1,500-4,000 yellow jackets by August. The same can of spray that worked in June fails in August.
  • Disturbed nests trigger swarm response. If you knock down a paper wasp nest mid-day, the colony scatters and rebuilds. Aggressive species like yellow jackets and hornets actively defend their nests when threatened.
  • Allergic reactions are unpredictable. Even without a known allergy, multiple stings can trigger severe reactions. The CDC documents wasp/hornet/bee stings as one of the most common causes of insect-related emergency room visits.

Our approach is straightforward: identify the species, locate the full nest (including any satellite colonies for yellow jackets), apply targeted treatment in protective gear, remove the nest carefully, and treat surrounding areas to prevent return. For active stinging situations near kid play areas or doorways, we prioritize same-day or next-morning response.

The Importance of Hiring Professionals for Wasp Control

Getting stung by these flying insects is never pleasant, and if you have a wasp problem on your property, this can be a frequent occurrence. This is why it’s important to hire a professional wasp exterminator who can not only get rid of their nesting sites and the wasps from your property but also ensure that they don’t come back. At Titan Pest Pro, we start our wasps control services by identifying and understanding the problem. This has, after all, made us one of the most trusted names in licensed pest control for residential and business properties in Springfield, Kansas City and nearby areas.

How to Tell Which Wasp You Have (Wasps vs Hornets vs Yellow Jackets vs Bees)

Four common stinging insects you might be dealing with in Missouri. Identification matters because treatment, urgency, and even legality differ — honey bees are legally protected in many situations and require relocation rather than extermination.

Paper wasp (Polistes) — the species behind most umbrella-shaped nests under Missouri home eaves.

Paper Wasps (Polistes spp.)

Slender body, long dangling legs in flight, brown with yellow markings. About ¾ inch long. Nest hangs from a single stalk — looks like an open umbrella made of gray papery cells, usually under eaves, in mailboxes, on door frames. Smaller colonies (12-100 wasps). Less aggressive than yellow jackets unless the nest is directly disturbed.

Yellow jacket (Vespula) — the aggressive ground-nesting species responsible for most late-summer stinging incidents.

Yellow Jackets (Vespula spp.)

Compact body, distinct bright yellow and black stripes, looks similar to a honey bee but slimmer and shinier (no fuzzy body hair). Nest is usually hidden — underground in old rodent burrows, inside wall voids, or in dense shrubs. The entrance hole is small but the colony can hold 1,500-4,000+ in late summer. Aggressive, especially in late summer and fall when food becomes scarce.

Bald-faced hornet — builds large gray football-shaped paper nests visible in trees and on eaves.

Hornets (Bald-Faced Hornets) (Dolichovespula maculata)

Black with white face markings. Larger than yellow jackets. Build distinctive enclosed gray paper nests — football or basketball-sized, hanging from tree branches, eaves, or large shrubs. Highly aggressive defenders of the nest. The nest you see hanging visibly in a tree is almost always a bald-faced hornet nest. Bald-faced hornets can become aggressive when their nest is disturbed, so it helps to understand bald-faced hornet sting risks before trying to deal with a nest on your own.

Mud dauber wasp — a solitary, rarely aggressive species common in Missouri garages and outbuildings.

Mud Daubers (Sceliphron and Chalybion spp.)

Long slender body with a thread-like waist, often black or blue-black. Nests are small tubes or clusters of mud cells attached to walls, ceilings, garage interiors. Solitary species (no large colony). Rarely aggressive — they typically don’t defend their nests. Often left alone because removal is easy and stings are uncommon.

Mud dauber tubes may look less active than other wasp nests, but they can still return if nesting areas are not removed properly. Learn how to get rid of mud daubers and their nests safely.

Bee Exterminator

Honey Bees (Important: Often Mistaken) (Apis mellifera)

Fuzzy body, golden-brown with darker bands. Slower flight than wasps. Build wax comb nests inside hollow spaces — wall voids, hollow trees, occasionally in chimneys. Honey bees are POLLINATORS and protected. If you have a true honey bee colony, we coordinate live removal and relocation with a local apiarist rather than extermination. See our Bee Removal page for details.

Wasp Nests and Other Behavior Facts

While the appearance is one way to tell the difference, you might not always want to get too close to these bugs for their venom is painful. The good news is that by looking at the behavior of wasps and hornets, you can further tell the difference without getting to close to them.

Nesting Habits

Paper wasps typically build nests in sheltered areas like eaves, attics, and under decks, almost appearing like Paper Mache. Meanwhile, Yellow jackets typically dig holes for their nests, which means that a wrongful step could release the angry swarm. Hornets are equally aggressive if their airborne nests are attacked.

Aggression Levels

While many wasps are not aggressive, yellow jackets and hornets can become defensive, especially if they feel threatened. This is particularly true in late summer.

Seasonal Activity

Wasps are most active in late spring and summer. They tend to be more aggressive when defending their nests during this time.

Signs of Wasp Infestations

Beyond seeing the nest itself, watch for:

  • Repeated wasp activity at the same outdoor location — around a specific spot under the eaves, at one corner of the deck, near a particular shrub. This usually means a nest is within a few feet.
  • Wasps coming and going from a specific hole or crack in the siding, soffit, or ground. For yellow jackets especially — if you see continuous traffic through a single opening, there’s a colony behind it.
  • Increased wasp activity around doors, windows, and outdoor lights, especially at dusk. Indicates a nesting site close enough that workers are returning home.
  • Buzzing sounds inside walls or ceilings. May indicate a wall-void yellow jacket or bald-faced hornet colony — these require professional treatment because spraying through the wall doesn’t reach the colony and can drive them indoors.

If you’re seeing any of these, don’t approach the area to investigate. Schedule a free inspection — we can identify what you’re dealing with from a safe distance.

Our Wasp Removal Process — Step by Step

Step 1 — Free Inspection

We come out to assess. We identify the species, locate the nest (including satellite nests for yellow jackets), and assess whether removal can happen safely. For confirmed honey bee colonies, we coordinate live removal with a local apiarist rather than treating. Inspection takes 15-30 minutes.

Step 2 — Treatment Plan and Pricing

We tell you what species you have, where the nest is, and what removal will cost — in writing, before any treatment. For nests in unsafe locations (high eaves, inside walls, near electrical), we explain the additional access requirements.

Step 3 — Safe Treatment Application

Treatment happens at the right time of day for the species — early morning or evening for paper wasps and bald-faced hornets when the colony is in the nest, daytime for yellow jacket ground nests when activity is full. We use protective gear and EPA-registered products applied directly to the nest and surrounding area.

Step 4 — Nest Removal

Once the colony is neutralized, we remove the nest itself. Paper wasp and bald-faced hornet nests come down intact. Yellow jacket underground nests typically don’t require excavation — we treat the entrance and the colony is eliminated underground. Mud dauber tubes are scraped off and disposed of.

Step 5 — Prevention and Ongoing Protection

We tell you what attracted them — most often, accessible eaves, soffit gaps, or yard conditions — and what to do about it. For families wanting ongoing protection, our Titan Core Home Protection plan ($99 initial + $65/month) includes bi-monthly perimeter treatment that catches new nests in the early-building stage before they become a problem.
One team for all of it.

Most companies handle just one — pests, or termites, or wildlife — and refer the rest out. Titan handles all three as one local team. One call, one company, one crew that knows your property.

Our guarantee is simple.

If a pest is covered by your plan and it comes back, we re-service at no charge — no matter what. No fine print.

Ongoing Protection with Titan Core Home Protection

Most wasp problems aren’t a one-time event — wasps build new nests every spring in the same favorable spots. Our Titan Core Home Protection plan ($99 initial + $65/month) includes bi-monthly perimeter treatment that catches new nests in the early-building stage (1-2 weeks old, before they’re large enough to be dangerous). Most wasp customers add Titan Core Home Protection after the initial removal because catching the next nest in April is cheaper than removing it in August.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Several factors: sweet outdoor food and drinks (especially soda, fruit, watermelon), uncovered trash, standing water in bird baths or drainage, accessible nesting sites (uncapped chimneys, soffit gaps, hollow porch posts), and yard conditions that support insect prey (mosquitoes, flies, spiders — yellow jackets are predators). Late summer is particularly active because natural food sources start to disappear and colonies become more aggressive scavengers.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Small paper wasp nests (under 3 inches across, under 20 wasps) early in the season can usually be handled DIY with proper precautions — evening application, full protective clothing, hardware-store wasp foam (longer range than spray). Yellow jacket nests, bald-faced hornet nests, and any nest larger than a softball should be left to professionals. The risk of multiple stings, allergic reaction, or driving the colony into your walls is too high.

Three quick differences. BODY: bees have fuzzy, hair-covered bodies; wasps have smooth, shiny bodies. WAIST: wasps have a distinct narrow ‘waist’ between thorax and abdomen; bees have a thicker, more uniform body shape. BEHAVIOR: bees focus on flowers and pollen, fly between blossoms in calm patterns. Wasps focus on protein sources (other insects, meat, sugary food at picnics) and fly more aggressively. NEST: honey bees build wax comb inside enclosed spaces (wall voids, hollow trees). Wasps build paper nests visibly under eaves or hidden in ground holes. If you’ve identified honey bees, see our Bee Removal page — we handle bees through coordinated live removal, not extermination.

Honest ranges: visible paper wasp or mud dauber nest typically $100-$200. Multiple nests or harder-to-reach locations $175-$350. Yellow jacket ground or wall-void nests $200-$400. Large bald-faced hornet nests requiring ladder access $250-$500. Free inspection includes a written estimate for your specific situation — no surprise charges after work begins.

Two reasons. First, colonies reach peak size in late summer — yellow jacket colonies can hit 1,500-4,000 workers by August, all defending the same nest. Second, natural insect prey becomes scarcer as fall approaches, so wasps shift to scavenging human food sources (picnic food, soda, trash) and become more confrontational at outdoor gatherings. This is why September is the peak month for wasp sting incidents in Missouri. The same nest that was ‘a few wasps’ in June can be aggressive enough to require professional removal in late August or September.
